Audition materials and
information are made available in the spring of each year.
Auditions to fill open positions may also be held at other times
during the year at the discretion of the conductors and/or Board
of Directors.
Audition appointments will be assigned upon receipt of a
completed Application for Audition and the audition fee.
Audition fees are not refundable and cover the costs associated
with auditions. Audition fees must be paid prior to the
audition. All current members, as well as potential new
members, must audition each season. All musicians must
be able to read music. Auditions consist of a prepared,
unaccompanied selection of the musician’s choice (two copies
provided for the judge); scales and positions determined by
the judges; and a sight reading exercise. Auditions are
performed “live” before professional musicians and are judged on
presentation, tone, musicality, accuracy, intonation, technique
and rhythm. The specific requirements for auditions for each
orchestra and type of instrument are provided with the audition
materials.
The final decisions on placement and seating are made by the
conductor. Acceptance into any of the orchestras and ensembles
is based on the musician’s ability. Musicians move from the
Preparatory Orchestra to the Youth Orchestra based on their
level of musicianship, not their age or grade in school.
Because placement in the orchestras is ability based, there may
be a wide disparity of ages within each orchestra. Please be
assured that every effort is made to recognize and consider not
only the level of musicianship of each person but also the
musician’s maturity level and ability to interact with older and
younger musicians.
Audition Hints
Sharing your musical talent with others is part of the
orchestral experience. Relax and enjoy the audition process. Be
comfortable. Be prepared. This helps you to be confident. Be
bold and expressive…this makes your music more interesting!
Choose a solo piece with which you are comfortable. Do not
choose a difficult piece to impress the judges. The best
strategy is picking your favorite piece and playing it well.
If orchestral excerpts are part of the audition process, take
them to your private music teacher to get ideas on style. Pay
close attention to the tempo markings indicated on the music. In
sight-reading, take time to look over the piece. Rhythm is a
very important factor. Most of all enjoy your audition! Your
best performance happens when you play from your heart. If you
have the desire and the ability, you deserve to be part of the
orchestra!
